China kart big power

Postby oldkart » Fri Jan 13, 2017 8:41 am

Maybe this has been covered before. I have just picked up a Baja Dune with the Howhit engine 150cc. This basically a one person kart even though it has two seats. I could spend as much as I gave for the kart on the engine and trans mods and from what I have read, it would still be very limited in what it could do. What are the chances of putting real power in one of these. Say like an engine and trans out of a 300 or larger 4 wheeler. These seem to handle two adults pretty well. If this has been done where can I find that thread and if not, let us start one with instructions and pics so that those interested in doing it can have clear instructions to follow. Wild things can be done as I just met a fellow that had his engine go out of his UTV and he installed the engine out of a Geo Metro in it along with the trans and it works great. I would love to have a kart that would do more than haul one person on flat ground and do it on a budget. Just a thought. hello

ANything is possible, as long as you have some mechanical knowledge. Also cost will also be a big factor. I've seen gokarts with snowmobile engines and all sorts of crazy stuff, just have a look on YouTube, plenty of videos there to get you started.

This may be a little lengthy but I believe that the more details that I give the better the answer I will get.
As stated, I have the Baja Dune 150cc Howhit. I took the 150 out and installed a 420cc with a torque converter and the red spring in the clutch. I put a 10 tooth sprocket on the driver and it had a 64 tooth sprocket on the axle. Before I changed the engine it would pull just myself up a hill and top out at about 37. Now I can pull it out of the garage and it wont even move. It will just sit and burn up the belt. So, I went from 9 horse to 13 with more torque. I went from a 16 tooth driven gear down to a 10. Only thing that I removed was the forward/reverse gear box. Any ideas.
Thanks scratching

Just shooting from the top of my head here: When removing the reverse gearbox was there any pulleys you are still using on it? Another thing, not being funny, i did this once being in a hurry, the belt is it on the right orientation?
Betcha it's going to be something simple causing the problem. What type and size torque converter do you have on there?

There were no pullys when removing the reverse box. the TC that I am using is the 30 but many have had good luck with it. I have a new belt coming on Monday and will check the orientation when installing it. This thing wouldn't even move from where it sat. just sat and burnt the belt. I am just wondering if the TC is even working. After I install the new belt I will put the rear of the kart up on blocks and see if the TC slides in and out as it is supposed to. I know that a lot of people have these buggies and I see lots of them for sale because they lack power. I want to develop a good engine swap for folks and document it so others can do the conversion.
Thanks for the ideas. :salute:

That is a very good possibility, Let me know how you make out once you get the belt and see of the TC is running correctly. BYW I like the idea of documenting the conversion, make sure you have alot of photos it make it so much easier for people to understand.

Got the new belt and after putting it on I raised the kart up on stands. had a bur on the TC and now the drive works well. The new problem is Gearing. I have a 10 tooth sprocket on the clutch and a 64 tooth on the axle. Tries to pull but just no good. at 6 to 1 ratio I am thinking that I can locate an 80 tooth for the axle or go with a jackshaft. I can setup and mount the shaft but not sure what gears to put on it in order to get the ratio that I need. If 6 to 1 wont move the buggy then is 8 to 1 going to be enough and at what point do I get a 10 mph hill climber and 15 top speed on the flat. Any ideas appreciated.

This site might help you figure out what gear you need to obtain the speed your looking for. Gear Ratio Speed Calculator

This video would explain what your looking to do: https://youtu.be/O35AwCp-6b8
